Geographic Literacy

Society of Historical Archaeology Conference is this week. Did you know that it was in Quebec City Canada? I am sure you did not hear about the horrific cold snap that happened all over the continent that has shut travelers down all over the place. If you have a chance you should check out the stuff that my Mrs. is talking about. She always has amazing things to say. Bill over at Succinct Research should be there as well.

Privacy Issues Raise Concerns for Remote Sensing
I have talked about this in the past several times. I talked about privacy concerns last time as well. UAS in the private sector could provide a serious concern in the future. It is not just an issue of safety. Having hundreds to thousands of UAVs through out the country at any given time means that there are unregulated/undocumented sensors flying around. Despite my love of drones and other UAVs I am completely sensitive to the issue of privacy. I certainly do not think that people should fly a sensor over their neighbors house and collect whatever data they please. And with smaller UAVs it might we might not even see them flying around while they collect data. So it is important to address the issue and begin to respect personal airspace.

How Can Geography Literacy Be So Bad in the Age of Google Earth?
We hear about statistics like this often. Of course I am concerned about it. Everybody is concerned about times the general public does not understand their career issues. I think though that there are fundamental issues though that are plaguing the US. The US is such a melting pot. Far more than most countries. So having a misunderstanding of those cultures is hurting the general public. I think that the lack geographic knowledge is part of that misunderstanding. Knowing where an area gives you an intimate knowledge of the people that live there. We might think that something is weird, but in that location, that climate, that geology, it might make perfect sense.

Thousands of years ago it made sense that people did not know about their neighbors. They never had access to the information. I enjoy cat memes as much as the next person, but I think that it is a shame that we have so much information available to us and people are not using it.

I am a GIS professional in Walla Walla, WA. I use this blog to force myself to really read through all of the GIS news that I get in my inbox. It also helps me practice writing.
